This is the single most important thing you can do. Find your stopcock — usually located under the kitchen sink — and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply to the property.

If the leak is from a specific appliance like a washing machine or dishwasher, there may be an isolation valve on the supply pipe to that appliance. Turning this off means you do not have to cut off water to the whole house.

Know where your stopcock is before an emergency happens. If you do not know where it is, find it now and make sure it turns freely.

If the leak is near your boiler or heating system, or if water is coming through a ceiling near electrical fittings, turn off your boiler immediately. If you are concerned about electrical safety, switch off the relevant circuit at your consumer unit (fuse box).
